Diary, 1839-1840.

A typescript of the diary (1839-1840) of John Bleecker Luce, a U.S. Indian agent to the Kaw (Kansa) Indians of Kansas, and later a subagent for other tribes in Indian Territory. The diary includes descriptions of daily life among the Kaw Indians; the Kaws' interactions with Pawnee Indians; and buffalo hunting. Also in the diary are lists of Indian words and signs (tribe unspecified) learned by Luce during his tenure as an Indian agent.
